PHILANTHROPY: BREAST CANCER AWARENESS

Why we do it:

Pink Ribbon

This year more than 203,500 women in the United States will learn for the first time that they have breast cancer, and more than 40,000 women will lose their lives.

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women in America; however, early detection and prompt treatment can significantly reduce the suffering and deaths caused by this disease. alpha Kappa Delta Phi, the first and largest national Asian interest sorority, proudly promotes our National Philanthropy - Breast Cancer Awareness, a project which is dedicated to increasing public knowledge about the early detection of breast cancer.

Nationally we have raised over $20,000 over the past year for breast cancer awareness, and we strive for more every year as we continue the fight against breast cancer.

What we do:

Here at the University of Texas at Austin, the Eta Chapter of alpha Kappa Delta Phi, works all year to promote breast cancer awareness and raise funds towards the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Pie-a-kdphi

October is breast cancer awareness month and during this month, we host our annual Service Week which includes Pie-a-KDPhi, poker tournament, 5-on-5 Basketball tournament, and club party. This is a time in which Austin and its surrounding communities (even as far as Houston, Dallas, and Oklahoma!) unite with alpha Kappa Delta Phi to help raise funds for breast cancer awareness and research.

In the spring, breast cancer awareness continues on with alpha Kappa Delta Phi. We have hosted our annual 5k Hope Run in the past as well as hosting charity poker tournaments.

We are not limited to the philanthropy of breast cancer awareness, and strive to involve ourselves in a variety of community service outreach programs. We have volunteered at a variety of community service events such as Adopt-a-Street and Habitat for Humanity. We work with various organizations on campus such as Beta Kappa Gamma, Kappa Phi Gamma, and Sigma Phi Omega and volunteer and host events such as Women's Empowerment Week.
